Family Vacation Planning

5-Day Kerala Itinerary With Kids and Elderly Parents: What Worked, What We Skipped & What We Regretted The hardest part of planning Kerala wasn't picking places from a travel reel. It was worrying whether the trip would completely wreck my 68-year-old parents' knees and test my 6-year-old’s patience.

Most standard itineraries cram Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey, and Kovalam into five days. For a backpacker, that works. For a three-generation family, that’s a recipe for tears and backaches. We cut the fluff, made peace with missing half the famous spots, and took it slow. Here is the unfiltered breakdown of our 5 days, mistakes included.

Day Route What We Planned vs What Happened Drive Time
Day 1 Kochi Airport to Munnar Reached resort, crashed. Cancelled the evening walk. 4.5 hrs
Day 2 Munnar Sightseeing Eravikulam + Mattupetty. Skipped Echo Point entirely. Local
Day 3 Munnar to Thekkady Missed boat tickets; fed an elephant; watched martial arts. 3.5 hrs
Day 4 Thekkady to Alleppey Boarded private houseboat; watched backwaters quietly. 4 hrs
Day 5 Alleppey to Kochi Banana chip shopping in Ernakulam, then straight to airport. 2 hrs

Day 1: The Mountain Drive Caught Us Off Guard

We landed at Kochi by mid-morning, hired a private AC Innova, and set off for Munnar.

Roughly 90 minutes in, the hairpin turns started doing their damage. My 6-year-old got motion sickness and threw up twice. Rookie mistake: we had packed the vomistop and wet wipes inside the heavy suitcases in the boot. By the time we pulled into our resort, my son was cranky, my dad’s lower back had locked up from sitting, and nobody cared about the scenic tea garden views. We skipped our evening walk, ordered hot tea to the room, and called it an early night.

Day 2: Ditching the "Must-See" Checklist

I had four tourist spots on my Day 2 notes. We managed two, and honestly, that was the right call.

We got to Eravikulam National Park early before the rush. The park buses were manageable, but by 11:30 AM at Mattupetty Dam, the sun was unforgiving. My parents found the uneven walking paths difficult and preferred sitting near the ticket stall benches in the shade. Meanwhile, my son completely tuned out the scenery and went on strike for an ice cream.

We dropped Echo Point on the spot. Instead of dragging everyone along just for a photo, we pulled over at a roadside stall. My dad got a proper hot filter coffee, the kid ate plain dal-chawal, and everyone’s mood reset.

Day 3: Missing the Boat in Thekkady

The road to Thekkady was wider and much easier on our stomachs. But our scheduling fell apart at Periyar Lake.

I assumed we could buy lake safari tickets on arrival. Huge mistake—afternoon slots were completely sold out. Seeing my frustration, our driver stepped in and suggested an elephant junction nearby. My son was terrified at first, but five minutes later he was beaming, hand-feeding a giant tusker. It wasn’t on our itinerary, but it ended up being his favorite memory of the entire trip.

That evening, we took my parents to the local Kalaripayattu martial arts show. Air-conditioned gallery, zero walking, and comfortable seats—my dad enjoyed it more than any viewpoint.

Day 4: The Houseboat Relief

I had spent weeks worrying about the Alleppey houseboat. Would a hyperactive kid fall overboard? Would my parents feel trapped?

The relief was instant the moment we stepped onto our private boat. The lower deck was gated, life jackets were ready, and the slow chugging of the backwaters had an immediate calming effect. My parents settled into cane chairs on the shaded deck with tea, watching village canoes pass by.

The onboard cook made a separate non-spicy potato-paneer dish and soft phulkas for my son, while my parents loved the mild vegetable stew. My spouse and I finally got our spicy Kerala fish fry.

Day 5: Souvenirs and Heading Home

The drive from Alleppey back to Kochi took just around two hours. We had three spare hours before our flight and toyed with exploring Fort Kochi’s colonial lanes.

We dropped it. Walking the hot pavement would have drained everyone before a flight. Instead, the driver took us to an Ernakulam wholesale street where we watched fresh banana chips being fried in coconut oil, picked up genuine black pepper, and headed straight to the terminal without stress.

What We Actually Spent (3 Adults + 1 Child)

We booked two separate hotel rooms everywhere so my parents could sleep peacefully away from our early-waking kid.

Expense Actual Paid
Mumbai–Kochi return flights (booked 3 months prior) ₹34,500
Hotels (2 rooms) + Private 1-Bedroom Houseboat ₹42,000
Dedicated AC Innova + Driver (5 days, all tolls) ₹19,500
Food, entry fees, elephant camp, show tickets ₹11,000
Total ₹1,07,000

A Few Practical Realities for Family Trips to Kerala:

  • Pre-book Periyar online: Do not depend on the counter for the lake boat ride. Slots go fast.
  • Keep medical kits under the front seat: Motion sickness tablets, ORS, wet wipes, and plastic bags should stay in the car cabin, never in the boot.
  • Ask hotels about walking distances: Hill resorts often put budget/standard rooms down steep staircases or slopes. Always insist on rooms next to the reception or restaurant if traveling with seniors.
  • Book an exclusive houseboat: Avoid sharing a larger boat with strangers if you have kids or elderly parents. An exclusive 1-bedroom or 2-bedroom gives you full control over the food, noise, and safety.

Don't let travel itineraries guilt you into running a marathon. Skipping two viewpoints so your parents can sip coffee and your kid can eat an ice cream in peace is what makes the trip memorable.
